Dating site OkCupid: We banned - white supremacist Chris Cantwell - for life - Washington Times

Dating site OkCupid tweeted Thursday afternoon that it had terminated the user account of a leader in the white supremacy movement.

“We were alerted that white supremacist Chris Cantwell was on OkCupid. Within Ten minutes we banned him for life,” the site said shortly before Two:30 p.m.

Mr. Cantwell is one of the white supremacist leaders prominently featured in a Vice News documentary that went behind the scenes in Charlottesville the past weekend.

“There is no room for hate in a place where you’re looking for love,” OkCupid added. “If any OkCupid members come across people involved in hate groups, please report it instantaneously.”

That last tweet included a link to the dating site’s “feedback” page, where “I want to report someone” can be found as an option on the feedback form under “I want to report someone.”

Selecting that menu item pulls up an explanatory bubble that fails to mention anything about reporting an individual for his or her affiliation with hate groups:

“If you find a scammer/ fake profile, you can report them by expanding more options (the three dot icon), and clicking report at the top right of their profile. If you are being harassed or got an inappropriate message, you can expand more options at the top of the message and report from there.”

On Monday, OkCupidannounced on Twitter that it would be providing money to the “C-ville Victim Ease to support the plucky people who stood against hate this weekend.” An photo affixed to that tweet read, “Let’s call it what it is: terrorism. There is no room for hate in our country, or anywhere. Let’s spread love, not hate.”

On its “About Us” page, OkCupid boils down its philosophy to “3 principles” it says makes the site “the best dating site on Earth: our love of math, we’re always free, and everyone’s welcome.”
